Ornilox Tablet contains Ofloxacin (fluoroquinolone antibiotic) and Ornidazole (nitroimidazole antimicrobial). Ofloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and leading to bacterial cell death, while ornidazole causes DNA strand breakage in anaerobic organisms and protozoa, resulting in cell death. It is indicated for the treatment of mixed bacterial and protozoal infections, including gastrointestinal infections (e.g., diarrhea, dysentery), intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, and other anaerobic infections. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to quinolones or nitroimidazoles, CNS disorders (e.g., epilepsy), and during pregnancy unless clearly indicated.
This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against aerobic bacteria, anaerobes, and protozoa, making it suitable for polymicrobial infections. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment, renal dysfunction, and those at risk of CNS effects or QT prolongation. Common adverse effects include nausea, metallic taste, dizziness, gastrointestinal discomfort, and rarely CNS disturbances. Avoid alcohol consumption during therapy due to potential disulfiram-like reactions with ornidazole.
